Social Networks and Me
I have personally used quite a few social networks. I use Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter regularly, while also using Linkedin and Goodreads occasionally. Like most people I've mostly used my various social networking presences for communication. Both direct communication with friends and acquaintances as well as less direct communication with public figures and other people who I follow. This latter form is mostly from Twitter while the former is mostly on networks like Facebook and YouTube. Beyond that, I've also had experience managing social media profiles for clubs and other organizations.
In terms of their value for libraries and other information science professionals, I think that an effective social media presence is crucial for providing the most for your community. They allow libraries to show their presence to many who might not know where else to look for information. As an example, when I regularly volunteered at the ACPL Library's Lincoln Collection, one of the main jobs that the librarians in the collection had, was to regularly post updates and stories about the collection. These often got a very positive response, and I even saw some people who, when they came to visit, said that a posting was the reason that they had decided to visit.
